3-26-2017: The DIVINE Pursuit: The Heart of the Gospel Message
The DIVINE Pursuit Message #1 “The Heart of the Gospel Message” Scripture: Acts 17:27, Genesis 3:1-24 Pastor Phil Whetstone March 25 & 26, 2017 Acts 17:22-28 "The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. 25 And He is not served by human hands, as if He needed anything, because He himself gives all men life and breath and everything else. 26 From one man He made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and He determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. 27 God did this so that men would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us. 28 'For in Him we live and move and have our being.' As some of your own poets have said, 'We are His offspring.'” KEY TRUTH: The BIBLE is not the story of man’s pursuit of God, but GOD’S DIVINE PURSUIT of man. IN THE BEGINNING Three Personal Creation Truths #1. God CREATED you for a PURPOSE. (Gen. 1:26-27) #2. God gives YOU a CHOICE. (Gen. 2:8-9, 15-17) #3. Satan challenges God’s love for YOU. (Gen. 3:1-8) Three Powerful Lessons about the Father’s Heart #1. God was the first to pursue us. (vs. 9) “But the Lord God called to the man, ‘Where are you?’" The entire plot of the Bible can be explained by this sentence: God is PURSUING us to bring us back to where He always wanted us! #2. God made a promise to us. (vs. 14-15) “So the Lord God said to the serpent, ‘Because you have done this, ‘Cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.’" Gen. 3:15 “I'm declaring war between you and the Woman, between your offspring and hers. He'll wound your head, you'll wound his heel." Message #3. God made a sacrifice to bring us back to Himself. (vs. 21-23) “The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.” "Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city... 16 ‘I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.’ 17 The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!’ And let him who hears say, ‘Come!’ Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.’” Rev. 22:14-17

3-19-2017: Church Unleashed: Take The Lid Off
Roughly 8 years had passed from the death and resurrection of Christ to the encounter between Peter and Cornelius in Acts Chapter 10. Thousands had come to Christ, the Holy Spirit was powerfully moving, and the Church was walking with power, they had a plan and a purpose. But up till now there was still a lid on the Church. God was about to take the lid off and unleash the Gospel powerfully into the world by removing barriers, and truly unleashing the Church. THREE CHARACTERS IN THIS GOSPEL STORY CORNELIUS- NEEDED AN ANSWER, just didn’t know it. (Acts 10:1-10) “At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment. 2 He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly. 3 One day at about three in the afternoon he had a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, ‘Cornelius!’ 4 Cornelius stared at him in fear. ‘What is it, Lord?’ he asked. The angel answered, ‘Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God.’” PETER- HAD THE ANSWER, but wouldn’t give it. (Acts 10:9-33) “Then a voice told him, ‘Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.’ 14 ‘Surely not, Lord!’ Peter replied. ‘I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.’ 15 The voice spoke to him a second time, ‘Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.’ 16 This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven.” (vs. 13-16) FOUR BARRIERS GOD HAD TO SHATTER #1. He breaks down our RESENTMENTS. Gentile = Unclean, Unholy Roman = Capture Centurion = Military #2. He breaks down our PREJUDICES. #3. He challenges our PRECONCEIVED IDEAS of who can be a Christian. #4. He attacks our PERSONAL areas of PRIDE. (vs. 14) "‘Surely not, Lord!’ Peter replied. ‘I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.’" Phil. 3:7 “Whatever was to my profit…I now consider loss.” JESUS- IS THE ANSWER and gives it FREELY to ALL. (Acts 10:34-48) Acts 10:27-29 “Talking with him, Peter went inside and found a large gathering of people. 28 He said to them: ‘You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with a Gentile or visit him. But God has shown me that I should not call any man impure or unclean.’” Acts 10:34-38 “Then Peter began to speak: ‘I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism 35 but accepts men from every nation who fear Him and do what is right.’” Further study: Reaction of church leaders- Acts 11:15-17 “…if God gave them the same gift as He gave us, who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could oppose God?" (vs. 17)

Acts 1:12-14, 2:1-3 “Then they returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day's walk from the city. 13 When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. 14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. ...1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”

10-30-2016: Reset: Hope in Dry Places
RESET Message #6 “Hope in Dry Places” 1 Kings 17:1-16 October 29 & 30, 2016 “Elijah said to her, ‘Don't be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small cake of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. 14 For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: 'The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord gives rain on the land.'" Notice some Interesting truths from the text 1 Kings 16:29-33 “In the thirty-eighth year of Asa king of Judah, Ahab son of Omri became king of Israel, and he reigned in Samaria over Israel twenty-two years. 30 Ahab son of Omri did more evil in the eyes of the Lord than any of those before him. 31 He not only considered it trivial to commit the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, but he also married Jezebel daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and began to serve Baal and worship him. 32 He set up an altar for Baal in the temple of Baal that he built in Samaria. 33 Ahab also made an Asherah pole and did more to provoke the Lord, the God of Israel, to anger than did all the kings of Israel before him. GREAT GOD PROMISES IN THE DRY PLACES #1. I’m not limited to what you do or do not have. God provided in the most unexpected places He provided in the wilderness. B. He provided through a widow. #2. I’m not limited to place where you are comfortable or liked. *Sidon- *Dependent on widow- #3. I’m not limited by what’s in the “widow’s pantry”. #4. I want you to trust and walk in obedience even when it is not easy. Notice all the steps of Obedience Elijah, go to wilderness. Elijah, go to the heart of enemy territory. Elijah, go to woman who has no resources- for resources. Widow, provide for a prophet when you have nothing. God is Not Just the God of the Supply, He’s the God of the Re-supply The re-supplier of strength The re-supplier of vision The re-supplier of grace The re-supplier of faith The re-supplier in our relationships The re-supplier of finances The re-supplier in trouble Notice how there are ongoing situations of need and trust- 1 Kings 17:17-24 Psalm 33:12-22 “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people He chose for His inheritance. 13 From heaven the Lord looks down and sees all mankind; 14 from His dwelling place He watches all who live on earth — 15 He who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do. 16 No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength. 17 A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save. 18 But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear Him, on those whose hope is in His unfailing love, 19 to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine. 20 We wait in hope for the Lord; He is our help and our shield. 21 In Him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in His holy name. 22 May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in you.”

10-23-2016: Reset: Resetting Your Faith
Reset “Resetting your Faith” Matt. 14:22-33; John 6:14-15 October 22 & 23, 2016 Pastor Dan Hamrick What is Faith? Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” Faith = Trust But… Trust ≠ Faith DTR = Define the Relationship FOUR PERSPECTIVES ON FAITH Perspective #1: The Crowd - John 6:15a “Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make Him king by force …” Faith can’t happen by force. Perspective #2: The Disciples - Matt. 14:26 “When the disciples saw Him walking on the lake, they were terrified. ‘It’s a ghost,’ they said, and cried out in fear.” Faith can’t exist in fear. Perspective #3: Peter - Matt. 14:31 “Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and caught him. ‘You of little faith,’ He said, ‘why did you doubt?’” Faith struggles in our doubts. Three Steps to Remove Doubt Pray – Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Change your thinking – 2 Corinthians 10:5 “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” Practice – Perspective #4: Jesus – Matt. 14:32 “And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.” Faith flourishes when Jesus is present. HOW TO PUSH “RESET” ON YOUR FAITH Have the “DTR”. Be honest with yourself and the Lord. Understand faith isn’t always calm waters. Put your confidence in Jesus.

RESET Message #4 “Me & Michael Finnegan” Scripture: 1 Cor. 11: 17-34 October 15 & 16, 2016 1 Cor. 11:17-34 “For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.’ 25 In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes.” FOUR RESETS FOUND IN THE LORD’S SUPPER #1. I AM REMEMBERING HIM. “For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.’ 25 In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.’" His vows to me- What he did for me- “…which is for you….” My vows to Him- What I promised Him- “…remembrance of me…” Luke 9:23-27 “Then He said to them all: ‘If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. 25 What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self? 26 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. 27 I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.’" I am calling you to me- FORGIVENESS I want you to quit fighting me- FOLLOW I want you to be led by me- SURRENDERED I want you to rest in me- TRUST “Remember; salvation is the free gift of God because you could never afford it, but that doesn’t mean it is cheap.” #2. I AM RESTING IN HIM. (vs. 24-25) “…. My body……my blood” You know what the Lord is saying in Communion- I AM ENOUGH! #3. I AM RELATIONALLY UP TO DATE. (vs. 18-21, 27-29) “In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it. 19 No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God's approval. 20 When you come together, it is not the Lord's Supper you eat, 21 for as you eat, each of you goes ahead without waiting for anybody else. One remains hungry, another gets drunk… “Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28 A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself…” Notice vs. 21-22 “They had taken the symbol of salvation, sacrifice and servanthood and made it into an opportunity for SELFISHNESS & ENDULGENCE.” TWO RELATIONSHIP RESETS CHRIST CALLS US TO 1. Am I up to date in my relationships with OTHERS? 1 Cor. 10:16-18 “When we ask the Lord's blessing upon our drinking from the cup of wine at the Lord's Table, this means, doesn't it, that all who drink it are sharing together the blessing of Christ's blood? And when we break off pieces of the bread from the loaf to eat there together, this shows that we are sharing together in the benefits of his body. 17 No matter how many of us there are, we all eat from the same loaf, showing that we are all parts of the one body of Christ.” TLB 2. Am I up to date in my relationship with CHRIST? #4. I AM READY FOR HIM, WHENEVER THAT MAY BE. (vs. 26) “For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.” 1 John 2:28-3:3 “And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when He appears we may be confident and unashamed before Him at His coming. 29 If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of Him. 3:1 How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him. 2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when He appears, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. 3 Everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. “ “Make sure when it comes time to die, all you have to do is die.” Jim Elliot

RESET Message #1- “Begin Again” Scripture: Acts 17:22-31 Pastor Phil Whetstone Big Idea- Our spiritual PERCEPTION has a huge impact on our ability to see God. Missed-perception #1. You think you are closer than you are. “We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.” Hebrews 2:1 Hebrews 2:1 Missed-perception #2. You feel much further than you are.- “God did this so that men would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.” Acts 17:22-34 Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: "Men of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. 23 For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. Now what you worship as something unknown I am going to proclaim to you. 24 "The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. 28 'For in Him we live and move and have our being.' As some of your own poets have said, 'We are his offspring.' 29 "Therefore since we are God's offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone — an image made by man's design and skill. 30 In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now He commands all people everywhere to repent. 31 For He has set a day when He will judge the world with justice by the man He has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising Him from the dead." Acts 17:22-31 Observations about this group of people They were religious. "Men of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. vs. 22 They knew they were missing something. I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. Now what you worship as something unknown I am going to proclaim to you. vs. 23 The ability to see God was impacted by their perception. “He is not far…” vs 27 WHY WE FEEL FAR FROM GOD #1. FAILURE- #2. DOUBTS/ INDECISIVENESS/ SKEPTICISM – I still have questions Notice: "The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. Vs 24 #3. LIFE. GOD’S DIVINE MOVE TOWARD YOU “God did this so that men would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us. 28 'For in Him we live and move and have our being.' As some of your own poets have said, 'We are His offspring.' “In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now He commands all people everywhere to repent. 31 For He has set a day when He will judge the world with justice by the man He has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising Him from the dead." Acts. 17:27-31 Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. 3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that He appeared to (many)..” 1 Corinthians 15:1-8 The Essentials of the Gospel Jesus is God in the flesh, He really lived. John 1:1-14 & Colossians 2:9-10 Jesus died for your sins on the Cross. Romans 5:8 & II Corinthians 5:21 Jesus rose from the dead as the proof & power. Ephesians 1:19-22 & Rom 5:6-11 Jesus is in heaven & intercedes for you before the Father. Hebrews 1:1-3 Jesus is coming again someday. Acts 17:31 & 1 John 2:28-3:3 HOW DO WE COME NEAR TO GOD? #1. Seek Him. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” Matt 5:6 “…anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6 #2. Reach for Him. vs 27 “Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God” John 1:12 #3. Turn Toward Him. vs 30 "Now it's time to change your ways! Turn to face God so he can wipe away your sins, pour out showers of blessing to refresh you” Acts 3:19, The Message Coming near to God is not DISTANCE, but DIRECTION.

If you wish, I will put up three shelters, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.’” Play it COMFORTABLE Play it SAFE Play it EASY Three Possible Problems with Not Stepping Out #1. Diminishing Faith. (vs. 14-20) “‘I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.’ 17 ‘O unbelieving and perverse generation,’ Jesus replied, ‘how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.’ 18 Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that moment. 19 Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, ‘Why couldn't we drive it out?’ 20 He replied, ‘Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.’" Our faith needs to be active…. #2. Divisions & Conflict. (vs. 18:1-3) Luke 9:46-48 “An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest. 47 Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside Him. 48 Then He said to them, ‘Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For he who is least among you all — he is the greatest.’" #3. Damaged Mission & Vision. (vs. 18:12-14) “What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? 13 And if he finds it, I tell you the truth, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. 14 In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should be lost.” NOTICE- WHO JESUS WAS SPEAKING WITH? 9-11-2016: ReFocus: Cliff Notes on the Kingdom
REFOCUS Message #2: “Cliff Notes on the Kingdom” Scripture Luke 10:25-37 Pastor Phil Whetstone The Cliff notes on the Kingdom really boil down to this: Luke 10:25-37 Love God - Love Others #1. The Motive of a Life on Mission is – GRATITUDE. “On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" "What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?" He answered: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" 28 "You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and you will live." vs 25-29 “If it is true that hurt people hurt people… then it should also be true that healed people help heal others, that forgiven people are the best at forgiving others, that the recipients of the most Grace from God, show the most Grace filled and Love filled love for others… but sadly- that often is not the case.” Pastor Phil #2. The Method of a Life on Mission - EXTRAVAGANT LOVE. “But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" In reply Jesus said: "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. 'Look after him,' he said, 'and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.' vss. 29-35 Notice the Extravagant Steps of the Samaritan: vs. 33 Compassion/Pity vs. 34 He examined him vs. 34 He bandaged him vs. 34 He lavished healing on him – “wine, oil” vs. 34 He carried him - “he put the man on his own donkey” vs. 34 He cared for him - overnight by the way (see verse 35) - “The next day” vs. 35 He sacrificed for him -“two silver coins”- vs. 35 He left an open account - “extra expense…” #3. The Opportunities Living our Mission - WILL COME UNEXPECTEDLY. TEMPTATIONS WITH MESSY LIVES INSULATE ISOLATE IGNORE Ministering into the life of the hurting takes “extra.” vss. 33-37 It often takes more time than you thought. It often takes more inconvenience than you wanted. It often involves more “cost” than you planned on. It often involves a lot more emotional energy than you dreamt. Don’t allow yourself to just pass by this message. "Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?" The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him." Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise." Personal Applications:

8-28-2016: God's Pathways: Integrity
God’s Pathways Message #7: “Integrity” Proverbs Survey and Daniel 6 August 27 & 28, 2016 Pastor Dan Hamrick Integrity - the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness Moral - holding or manifesting high principles for proper conduct Listen to theses stats… 1991 a book was written called “The Day America Told the Truth”. Here were the stats that were posted…remember this was 1991. -13% of people believe in all the 10 commandments -40% of people believe in 5 of the 10 commandments -Estimated that 91% of people lie regularly (at least once a day) -20% of peoples work day is spend goofing off instead of doing their work -74% of people admit that they would steal from someone if they knew they wouldn’t miss it A study came out in 2002 from the University of Massachusetts that said 60% of people lie at least once in a 10 minute conversation. Another study came out in 2010 from the Josephson Institute Center of youth ethics that surveyed 43,000 high school students in both public and private high schools and here is what they found out: -59% of high school students admitted to cheating on a test during their past school year -34% of high school students admitted to doing it more than 2 times -1 out of 3 admitted to plagiarizing an assignment from the internet If we move into the category of marriages and remaining faithful you will find all kinds of stats. The University of Chicago has been collecting data and doing research on faithfulness in marriage since 1988 and in 2006 they published an article that says 15%-18% of people at some point in their marriage have had an affair. Now this is the lowest number out of all the stats I read in this category…some were up in the 70%. But to me even the 15%-18% is crazy. What does the Word of God say about integrity? Proverbs 10:9 “Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out.” Proverbs 11:3 “The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.” Proverbs 13:6 “Righteousness guards the person of integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner.” Open your Bible to Daniel 6 FRUITS OF INTEGRITY Someone who is Trustworthy – vs. 4 “They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy…” Someone who is Authentic – vs. 5 “We will never find any basis for charges against this man Daniel…” Someone who is the same in Private and Public – vs. 10 “…he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem.” Someone who is Consistent – vs. 10 “Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.” Someone who is Confident in their Actions – vs. 22 “Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty.” Satraps: The satraps, appointed by the king, normally were members of the royal family or of Persian nobility, and they held office indefinitely. As the head of the administration of his province, the satrap collected taxes and was the supreme judicial authority; he was responsible for internal security and raised and maintained an army. Integrity Stealers: Corruption – Hypocrisy – “A person may forget 90% of what someone says but they rarely forget how they lived” -Unknown Dishonesty – Integrity means both talking and walking…IN THE WAY OF JESUS So where do we go from here? Big Idea: Integrity doesn’t just happen and it isn’t forced, it’s a matter of the heart Questions for Reflection: Am I a person that would be considered a person of high integrity? What do I need to start doing to move towards a pathway of integrity? What do I need to continue to keep doing to avoid the integrity stealers in my life?

8-14-2016: God's Pathways: Sticks and Stones
GOD’S PATHWAYS Message #5 “STICKS AND STONES” Proverbs 15 & Survey August 13 & 14, 2016 Prov. 25:28 “Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control.” Prov. 18:21 “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” THREE THINGS WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT WORDS TRUTH #1. Words have incredible potential. (Prov. 12:18) “Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. “ Prov. 25:15 “Through patience a ruler can be persuaded, and a gentle tongue can break a bone.” Job 4:3-4 “Think how you have instructed many, how you have strengthened feeble hands. 4 Your words have supported those who stumbled; you have strengthened faltering knees.” (Job) TRUTH #2. Words have tremendous power. Prov. 25:15 “…a gentle tongue can break a bone” Prov. 18:21 “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” James 3:5 “…the tongue is a small thing, but what enormous damage it can do. A great forest can be set on fire by one tiny spark.” TLB HARSH GENTLE Prov. 15:1 “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” DESTROYING BUILDING Prov. 12:25 “An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up.” CRUSHING STRENGTHENING Prov. 15:4 “The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.” Job 4:3-4 “Think how you have instructed many, how you have strengthened feeble hands. 4 Your words have supported those who stumbled; you have strengthened faltering knees.” CUTTING HEALING Prov. 12:18 “Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Prov. 15:4 “Kind words heal and help; cutting words wound and maim.” Message DIVIDING UNIFYING Prov. 15:1 “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Prov. 15:18 “A hot-tempered man stirs up dissention, but a patient man calms a quarrel.” Prov. 16:18 “A perverse man stirs up dissension and a gossip separates close friends.” Prov. 25:24 “Better to live on the corner of a roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.” (see also Prov. 27:15-16) INAPPROPRIATE TIMELY Prov. 15:23 “A man finds joy in giving at apt reply, and how good is a timely word.” (see also Prov. 25:11) Prov. 15:23 “Congenial conversation — what a pleasure! The right word at the right time — beautiful!” Message QUICK THOUGHTFUL Prov. 15:28 “The heart of the righteous weighs its answers, but the mouth of the wicked gushes evil.” (see also Prov. 29:20) Notice: Characteristics of DEATH WORDS Quick (Prov. 29:20; James 1:19) Cutting (Prov. 12:18) Careless (Prov. 10:9) Uncontrolled (Prov. 29:11) Malicious (Ps. 15:2-3; Prov. 17:3-5) Characteristics of LIFE WORDS AFFIRMING (1 Thess. 4:18) CONTROLLED (Prov. 11:12, 17:28) CAUTIOUS (Prov. 10:9) THOUGHTFUL (Prov. 25:11) KIND (Prov. 12:25) HONEST (Prov. 12:19) HONORING (Prov. 27:2) Prov. 24:26 “An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips.” TRUTH #3. Words can be controlled, but not by you alone. James 3:2, 8, 12 “If anyone can control his tongue, it proves that he has perfect control over himself in every other way…but no human being can tame the tongue. …12 Can you pick olives from a fig tree, or figs from a grape vine? No, and you can't draw fresh water from a salty pool.” TLB Remember: Words come from somewhere… Matt. 15:10-11, 16-20 “Jesus called the crowd to Him and said, ‘Listen and understand. 11 What goes into a man's mouth does not make him 'unclean,' but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him 'unclean.' … Jesus asked them. 17 ‘Don't you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man 'unclean.' 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20 These are what make a man 'unclean'; but eating with unwashed hands does not make him 'unclean.'" Psalm 39:1 “I said, ‘I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin…’” Lord thank you for speaking to me today. I have heard your Word and the one thing I need to do is… ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ More of THE WORD on words- Prov. 4:24; 6:17; 8:8, 13; 10:11, 19, 21, 30-31; 11:9, 13; 12:13-14, 18-19, 22; 13:2-3; 16:21-24; 17:5, 7, 9, 20, 27-28; 18:4-8, 20-21, 23; 19:1, 5, 9, 28; 21:23; 25:11-12; 26:17-23; 28:23; 31:26

7-24-2016: God's Pathways: A Fool's Guide to Living
GOD’S PATHWAYS Message #2 “A Fool’s Guide to Living” Proverbs Survey July 23 & 24, 2016 Prov. 1:7 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.” Prov. 10:21 “The lips of the righteous nourish many, but fools die for lack of judgment.” FOUR KEYS TO FOOLISH LIVING #1. Don’t think…just act. A. A wise person retreats long enough to give a gentle answer. A fool exacerbates the situation. Prov. 15:1 “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” B. A Wise person learns to react with patience in stressful situations. A fool gives full vent. Prov. 14:1 “A quick-tempered man does foolish things, and a crafty man is hated.” Prov. 29:11 “A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control.” #2. Don’t think…just SPEAK. Prov. 15:2 “The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly.” Prov. 10:14 “Wise men store up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool invites ruin.” Prov. 10:19 “When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise.” This is especially dangerous for those who are verbally agile or those with quick temper or wit. A. Responding Prov. 18:13 “He who answers before listening--that is his folly and his shame.” B. Gossip Prov. 20:19 “A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid a man who talks too much.” C. Blurting out Prov. 12:23 “A prudent man keeps his knowledge to himself, but the heart of fools blurts out folly.” D. Enjoying the sound of your own voice Prov. 18:2 “A fool finds no pleasure in understanding but delights in airing his own opinions.” God’s Wisdom: Prov. 12:23 “A prudent man keeps his knowledge to himself, but the heart of fools blurts out folly.” Prov. 17:28 “Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.” Prov. 30:32 "If you have played the fool and exalted yourself, or if you have planned evil, clap your hand over your mouth!” James 1:19-27 “My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry… 26 If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.” #3. Don’t quiet yourself…live noisy. Contemplation = Life centered in Christ = Life that pays attention to God Unbridled restlessness drives us outward so that our actions do not issue forth from some free center, but from compulsion…we become impatient with every hunger, every ache…and we become convinced that unless every pleasure we yearn for is tasted, we will be unhappy.” Ronald Rolheiser Prov. 14:14 “The faithless will be fully repaid for their ways, and the good man rewarded for his. 15 A simple man believes anything, but a prudent man gives thought to his steps.16 A wise man fears the LORD and shuns evil, but a fool is hotheaded and reckless. 17 A quick-tempered man does foolish things, and a crafty man is hated.” Prov. 23:4 “Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint.” Prov. 26:11 “As a dog returns to its vomit so a fool repeats his folly.” #4. Don’t listen to anyone…refuse to take any advice. A. Refuse parents direction or discipline. Prov. 15:5 “A fool spurns his father's discipline, but whoever heeds correction shows prudence.” B. Wise in his own eyes. Prov. 12:15 “The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice.” C. Calloused / closed off to correction of rebuke. Prov. 17:10 “A rebuke impresses a man of discernment more than a hundred lashes a fool.” D. Fools like to spend time with other fools. Prov. 23:9 “Do not speak to a fool, for he will scorn the wisdom of your words.” Prov. 13:20 “He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.” Wisdom- OPEN, TEACHABLE, HUMBLE AND PLIABLE. Prov. 9:9 “Instruct a wise man and he will be wiser still; teach a righteous man and he will add to his learning.” When others correct me how do I respond? Do I get angry or defensive? Do I deflect this unsolicited advice? Do I confront them with their failings and their sin? Do I respond with a “how dare you” attitude? Help for recovering fools: Confess you’ve been foolish. (Psalm 38:4-5) Humble myself to listen. (1 Peter 5:7) Seek and receive God’s wisdom. (James 1:5) Begin the journey. (Proverbs 9:4-10)

7-17-2016: God's Pathways: Mining For Gold
GOD’S PATHWAYS Message #1- “Mining for Gold” Proverbs 1 & 2 July 16 & 17, 2016 Three words that run through the book of Proverbs- Paths, Ways, and Plans When our plans and paths intersect God’s the result is- Peace, Confidence, Joy and Life. When our plans and paths are at odds with God’s they lead to Frustration, Pain and Disappointment. Key’s to Understanding God’s Pathways for Living Proverbs 1 & 2 Prov. 1:1-7 “The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: 2 for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight; 3 for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair; 4 for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young — 5 let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance — 6 for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise. 7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.” KEY #1: LOOK (seek)- (vs. 2) “...for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight...” Prov. 2:1-5 “My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, 2 turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, 3 and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, 4 and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.” Prov. 8:17 “I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me.” Prov. 18:15 “The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge; the ears of the wise seek it out.” It is the indication of a Hungry Spirit. KEY #2: LISTEN- (vs. 5) “….let the wise listen…” The key with listening is slowing down, asking and applying what we hear. It is the indication of a Humble Spirit. Listen to God’s Voice- Prov. 2:6 “For the Lord gives wisdom, and from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” Prov. 30:5-6 "Every word of God is flawless; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. 6 Do not add to His words, or He will rebuke you and prove you a liar.” Listen to Wise Counsel- Prov. 15:22 “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” Prov. 20:18 “Make plans by seeking advice; if you wage war, obtain guidance.” KEY #3: LEARN- (vs. 5) “…add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance…” It is the indication of a Teachable Spirit. KEY #4: LEAN (trust)- (vs. 7) “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.” It is the indication of a Yielded Spirit. Prov. 3:5-8 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. 8 This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.” Two Important Truths about “The Path” If you decide NOT to follow God’s direction YOU WILL REAP THE FRUIT OF YOUR INVESTMENTS. (Prov. 1:20-33) If you decide to FOLLOW God’s direction YOU PLACE YOURSELF IN THE POSITION OF HIS FAVOR. (Prov. 2:1-11) God’s Pathways are not intended to steal our life…but give it. Peace- Prov. 3:17; Provision- Prov. 3:4, 12:2; Protection- Prov. 1:33

6-26-2016: Modern Family: Beautifully Blended
The North American definition of “blended family” would state…a family consisting of a couple and their children from this and all previous relationships. -In 1960 73% of children lived in a 2 biological parent home -In 1980 61% of children lived in a 2 biological parent home -In 2014 46% of children live in a 2 biological parent home THE MOTHERS AND SONS OF ISRAEL… (Gen. 29, 30, 35) Leah – First Wife 1) Reuben 2) Simeon 3) Levi 4) Judah Bilah – Rachel’s Maidservant 5) Dan 6) Naphtali Zilpah – Leah’s Maidservant 7) Gad 8) Asher Leah – First Wife 9) Issachar 10) Zebulun Dinah Rachel – Second Wife – First Love 11) Joseph 12) Benjamin 4 MYTHS ABOUT BLENDED FAMILIES Myth #1 – Blended is bad. Myth #2 – Relationships amongst the blended occur instantly. Myth #3 – Blended families operate like traditional families. Myth #4 – A blended family should look like what we see on TV. HOW TO BECOME A BEAUTIFULLY BLENDED FAMILY OF GOD 1) Our goal should be unity. (Gen. 37:3-11) 2) Clear boundaries and follow them. (Heb. 12:7-11) “Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as His children. For what children are not disciplined by their father?  8  If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all.  9  Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live!  10  They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in His holiness.  11  No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” 3) Be who we say we are. (Gen. 39-41) 4) Forgive a lot. (Gen. 42-45) Family is in the business of forgiving! Matt. 18:21-22 “Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, ‘Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?’ 22  Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.’” 5) Understand that family is forever. (Galatians 4:4-7) “But when the set time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law,  5  to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. 6  Because you are His sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, ‘Abba, Father.’  7  So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are His child, God has made you also an heir.” Are you allowing yourself to be part of the beautifully blended family of God?

5-22-2016: Modern Family: Passing On Your Faith To Your Family
MODERN (Biblical) FAMILY Message #3 “Passing on Your Faith to Your Family” Deuteronomy 6:1-8 May 21 & 22, 2016 Deut. 6:1-9 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.” FOUR KEYS TO DISCIPLING YOUR FAMILY #1. NURTURE YOUR OWN FAITH- (vs. 4-6) “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.” You speak what you know....you teach what you are. “A mistake is thinking our children will love God more than WE LOVE HIM, pray more than WE PRAY, read the Word, more than WE READ and allow holiness to infiltrate their decision making more than WE ALLOW HOLINESS TO AFFECT US.” Pastor Phil Notice the Phrase: “Impress them on your children” (vs. 7) Fact: 38% of evangelical children (from evangelical churches) cannot identify one person who models the precepts that they are taught in church. #2. TAKE THE RESPONSIBILITY TO TEACH & TRAIN YOUR CHILDREN- (vs. 7) “Impress them on your children.” “Those with social agendas that are contrary to the Word of God and traditional American culture understand the power of the subtle, and the effectiveness of time. You can accomplish far less than you thought you could in a week, but you can accomplish far more than you dreamed in a lifetime. That truth is powerfully evidenced in our culture today.” Pastor Phil Teach the principles and truths of God’s Word in a regular setting. Model and practice those truths together as a family in your values. Serve and minister together as a family as a demonstration. Explain why these truths and values are important. KEEP ON RE-ENFORCING THEM OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER… Important truth: If we do not teach our children…someone else will. #3. USE TEACHABLE MOMENTS FOR LIFE LESSONS- (vs. 7) “Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” Examples of teachable moments- #4. BE INTENTIONAL- (vs. 7- 8) “…when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the door frames of your houses and your gates.”

MODERN (Biblical) FAMILY Message #2: “Positive Parenting in a Messy World” Scripture: Genesis 37:1-36 May 14 & 15, 2016 FOUR FOUNDATIONAL TRUTHS ABOUT CHILDREN #1. Every child is a gift. (Prov. 17:6, Psalm 127:3-5) “Children are a gift from God; they are His reward.” TLB #2. Every child is unique. (Prov. 22:6) “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” #3. Every child must be lead according to these truths. (1 Cor. 4:1-2) “Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.” #4. Every child has a choice. (Prov. 3:1) “My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart…” Prov. 13:1 “A wise son heeds his father's instruction…” FOUR CAUTIONS IN PARENTAL LOVE Genesis 37 #1. Base our love on performance. (vs. 3) “Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made a richly ornamented robe for him…” “Comparison is the root of all inferiority.” James Dobson #2. Base our love on personality. (Genesis 25:27-28) “The boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the open country, while Jacob was a quiet man, staying among the tents. 28 Isaac, who had a taste for wild game, loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob.” #3. Base our love on spousal relationship. “…because he had been born to him in his old age…” That’s not quite the full story- Background: Gen. 29:14-30 “Jacob loved Rachel more than Leah…” #4. Basing our love on “life stage”. “…he had been born to him in his old age…” “Parenting is one of those jobs that by the time you figure out what you are doing, you are out of a job.” Howie Hendricks THE DESTRUCTIVE IMPACT OF FAMILY FAVORITISM Resentment Jealousy Hatred Rivalry Feeling of rejection; lack of love THREE THINGS THAT EVERY CHILD DESERVES #1. UNCONDITIONAL LOVE. #2. BOUNDARIES & DISCIPLINE. (Heb. 12:7-11) “Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? 8 If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live! 10 Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in His holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. 5-8-2016: Modern Family: Foundation in the Family
MODERN (Biblical) FAMILY Message #1- Foundation in Family Scripture: Genesis 37 & Survey May 7 & 8, 2016 JOSEPH The Power of a Dream Genesis 37:1-2 “Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan. 2 This is the account of Jacob. Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives, and he brought their father a bad report about them.” THE FRUIT FROM JOSEPH’S FOUNDATION #1. He showed moral purity in the face of strong temptation and loneliness. (Gen. 39) #2. He learned how to find strength in the Lord in the midst of hopeless and unfair circumstances. (Gen. 40) #3. He learned how to listen to the Spirit of God for wisdom, direction and guidance. (Gen. 40-42) #4. He was able to let go of hatred and express forgiveness and grace to those who had been cruelest to Him. (Gen. 42 & 50) #5. He understood how to pass along a heritage of faith to his own children, all along living in a foreign, toxic culture. (Gen. 48) FOUR INCREDIBLEY ENCOURAGING TRUTHS 1. God specializes in messy families. 2. God is the God of the recycle. 3. The Lord is able to give the power to break dysfunctional patterns in family. 4. When we are FAITHFUL to do what we can, the Spirit of God is able to do what we cannot, be where we cannot be, and FILL IN THE EMPTY SPOTS we may have missed in our families.

Our Mission: Colonial Woods exists to develop fully committed disciples through CHANGED LIVES.

With that, we believe the following eight characteristics to be the evidence of a changed life: Worship, Prayer, God's Word, Transformation, Outreach, Biblical Community, Ministry and Stewardship.

In uncertain days like these, we believe our mission and these characteristics help provide that solid foundation that is so necessary in a good church home--a place where we can know we are loved and accepted just the way we are, a place committed to Biblical truth and it's application for today's challenges, a place where we can find support and family, a place where our kids can get the right moral and spiritual teaching and yet still have fun, and a place where we can walk together in the lifelong process of becoming all that God wants us to be. That is the kind of place we are committed to being at Colonial Woods Missionary Church.
